Hotel Bentota Beach

Location: Bentota Beach Hotel was one of the earliest beach hotels in Sri Lanka and, as such, has a privileged location alongside Bentota's broad sandy beach and a broad lagoon used for watersports. The town is approximately 80km south of Colombo, with the drive from the airport usually taking about three hours.

Description:
Built under the instruction of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, this is a vast, confidently-designed hotel. It has 133 bedrooms, three pools, two restaurants, several shops and an array of tiered terraces overlooking a large playing area which leads down to the lagoon. The hotel is particularly proud (and justifiably so) of its sports complex and entertainment schemes, which offer a comprehensive range of games and activities. Parents can rest assured that their children are being well looked after and have plenty to do in a traditional beach-holiday setting.

Accommodation:
There are 133 rooms: 105 Standard, 12 Superior Standard, 12 Deluxe, 1 Superior Deluxe and 3 Suites, each containing en suite bathrooms, satellite TV, fans and a/c Views from the top of the hotel are quite spectacular and generally speaking the higher the room, the dearer the price.

Facilities:
There are two restaurants, one mid-range dining room which offers extensive buffets in a spacious, uncomplicated setting, and another a la carte restaurant which is expensive but very good. In the vast grounds at the back of the property, there is an endless list of things to do from volley-ball, basket-ball, climbing frames, gymnasium, water-polo, badminton and elephant rides to water-sports on the lagoon such as banana-boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing, diving, windsurfing and wave boarding. Elsewhere there is also table tennis, pool and snooker. In the evenings there is also an abundance of entertainment such as dancing in the moonlight at the open-air discotheque, karaoke or a movie on a giant screen. In the arcade downstairs there is a hair-dressing salon as well as shops selling jewellery, gifts, books, ornaments and saris.

Excursions:
Visit the nearby Lunuganga - a garden retreat that was created by Sri Lanka's iconic architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Go out to sea in a catamaran with the fisherman or take a boat ride along the tranquil Madu River past quaint rural villages, en route, visit the local markets, temples & craft and antique shops. Visit Kosgoda's Marine Turtle hatchery - a valuable conservation project that protects the endangered Marine Turtles of Sri Lanka. One hour's drive will take you to the historic town of Galle and the 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site. Explore Galle Fort's narrow streets lined with Dutch and British colonial era buildings which are still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the lighthouse, and a growing collection of art galleries and several boutique hotels.
